Creating an RPG~
Step 1; The Idea Phase
Set up a thread in this (RPG Start Up Requests and Rules) section stating the idea of your RPG. The title of that thread should look like this:
[Idea] A Game of Thrones
The inside of that thread should include the basic idea of your RPG and an introduction to it, like this:
Long ago, in a time forgotten, a preternatural event threw the seasons out of balance. In a land where summers can last decades and winters a lifetime, trouble is brewing. The cold is returning, and in the frozen wastes to the north of Winterfell, sinister and supernatural forces are massing beyond the kingdom’s protective Wall. At the center of the conflict lie the Starks of Winterfell, a family as harsh and unyielding as the land they were born to. Sweeping from a land of brutal cold to a distant summertime kingdom of epicurean plenty, here is a tale of lords and ladies, soldiers and sorcerers, assassins and bastards, who come together in a time of grim omens.
Here an enigmatic band of warriors bear swords of no human metal; a tribe of fierce wildlings carry men off into madness; a cruel young dragon prince barters his sister to win back his throne; and a determined woman undertakes the most treacherous of journeys. Amid plots and counterplots, tragedy and betrayal, victory and terror, the fate of the Starks, their allies, and their enemies hangs perilously in the balance, as each endeavors to win that deadliest of conflicts: the game of thrones.
It doesn't have to be that detailed, but we need a basic introduction to the story in which we will be playing.
In this thread, you also need to state what races you will allow (is it an orcs, elves, etc type RPG?), make it clear whether or not magic is allowed, tell us if it is going to be sci-fi or fantasy based (or both... or other), and set maximum number of players you want to join in on the story. The minimum is always four people.
Once you have your desired amount of players accomplished, you can move on to step two.
Step 2; Character Creation
Set up a second thread in the Character Creation Section for character sheets. The title of that thread should look like this:
[CC] A Game of Thrones
ALL characters for a single RPG will go into this thread. Do not post another thread for your character, post it in the thread that your GM started.
All character sheets MUST follow the same format. It should like this (if you have another character sheet you'd rather have your RPG members use, please PM it to the RPG mod for approval, and then all of your members must follow the exact same sheet):
Name: Full name of your character
Nickname/Alias: If your character feels the need to hide themselves behind another name, state this here.
Age: How old is your character? If unknown, write "unknown"
Apparent Age: How old your character appears to be to others. If your elf is 3000 years old but looks to be 21, we need to know.
Sex: Male, female, unknown, both, neither etc.
Race: Orc, Elf, Qunari, etc
Height: How tall? Use whichever system your country uses.
Weight: Let us know the exact weight of your character
Eye Colour: Pretty self explanatory
Hair Colour/Style: Need hair colour and how it is worn, ex. Brown and in a low ponytail.
Skin Color/Complexion: Skin, scales, colour of skin, pock marks? We need to know!
Weapons: What does your character use to fight? Describe it in detail.
Armor: What does your character use to protect himself? Describe in detail.
Clothing: What other clothing does your character wear?
Appearance: Alongside with how tall, the weight, eye colour, hair, etc, we need to know any special physical traits your character may have. Scars, missing limbs, crooked teeth, things along that sort. Please be detailed!
Powers/Magic/Skills: Give detailed descriptions of the types of power/magic/skills your character has.
Weaknesses: Give a list of weaknesses that your character has. No character goes without weakness.
Personality: A detailed description of the type of person your character is.
History: Tell us, in detail, where your character came from and how he came to be where he is now.
YOUR CHARACTER NEEDS TO HAVE WEAKNESSES. Far too often there are RPGs where characters face off and neither can die because of some special power they wound up having. Your characters must be able to die eventually. If your main character dies, but you still want to play, ask the GM if you can create a second character. If he says no, sit tight until the next RPG starts, or start up one of your own!
Don't worry about being too detailed or not detailed enough. If a character isn't detailed enough, an RPG mod will let you know and you will need to edit it before the RPG can start. Each character must be ready to set out on the story before the RPG can start.
Once you have mod approval, you can start step three.
Step 3; Out of Character Thread
Once you have mod approval to start your RPG, you need to create an Out of Character thread in the Out of Character Threads section for your story. The title of that thread should look like this:
[OOC] A Game of Thrones.
In that thread, you will post all out of character comments. You will also need to tell people if you are going to be away or unable to post for a certain amount of time. It will be up to the GM (game master) whether or not the story will wait on you. If the story will not wait on you, you need to find a good reason for your character to be absent. Send him on a side quest if necessary. The point of this thread is to make sure that there are no hiccups in the story.
Once you have set up this thread, you can move on to step four.
Step 4; Starting Your RPG
Once you have successfully completed steps 1-3, you are ready to start your RPG! Start your RPG in the Story Section. Your RPG title should look like this:
[RPG] A Game of Thrones
Your posts need to be long (at least 2 paragraphs that have at least 5 sentences or more in them) and very detailed. Some of the length can be made up for by conversation, but no post should ever be entirely conversational. If you are experiencing writers block, use the OOC thread and talk to your RPG teammates, they can help you.
Also, I know not all of us are native English speakers, so just try to be as clear and concise in your posting as possible. If you have a hangup on any words, please post in the OOC thread about them. The OOC thread will be your lifeline to keeping the RPG up and running.
Well, that's it. Hopefully your RPG is now started and you're well on your way to unraveling the mysteries, plots, and deaths of your story!
If you have any questions or suggestions please let me know.
