We had a woman work with us a while from Queensland (I think that's it?) and she had a pretty thick accent, but it wasn't so thick that I didn't know what she was saying

Did she ever say what part of Queensland she was from? I know that the further north you go, the thicker the accent seems to become.

I think I do better with accents when I talk face to face with someone and can read their body language and facial expressions too. Just listening to words I think I catch about 70%. I recently had to take a phone call from a native French-speaker who was trying to communicate to me in English. Dear God, we had such a struggle to talk to each other! Francophones speak really fast... in any language.

I find the French accent ridiculously difficult to understand. I had a French lecturer in college whose accent was unbelievably... well, impenetrable. I literally could not understand a word he was saying even though he was speaking English. Well, that's what the other students told me anyway. It certainly didn't sound like English to me!
