Does anybody here read it?
Is any of it actually any good?
What would you recommend to a complete noob of the genre?

I read a little...
Who am I kidding? I've spent hundreds of hours reading ff over many many years of my life. I go through stages of being addicted to it.
FF.net is a place where you will find some of the best writing in the world right next to MUCH of the worst writing you will ever see. It's all in there together, and it takes time to learn how to sift through it all properly.
As for recommendations, that's a really personal thing. You need to decide which fandoms and characters speak to you the most and work for there. Often FF is a guilty pleasure. I read a lot of lesbian stories on there, a genre of it's own which is referred to "femslash" in the world. You really just need to search through and find your own stuff.

I think the reason I don't read FF is because I've only ever read the bad ones (which were usually sent to me because they were so horribly bad). Oh no. Now I'm intrigued to check FF.net in case there's anything to get obsessed with. D:

A lot of it depends on your fandoms. Some fandoms are way more popular than others on ff.net. Some you will hardly find any fics for. And a small amount of fics means a low chance of finding a good one. Many fandoms have thousands of stories though. For example, Glee right now has roughly 104,000 fics on the ff.net site alone.

Oh. Oh no. I've found one. A good one. And it's really really long. Good thing I ordered a new notebook yesterday, so I can read stuff in bed.

I can only read ff on my phone. I got so used to it. I can't even read it on tablets or laptops haha, only my phone.

Thanks, Crouton. I'm going to check that site out. I just hope they're not all sex stories or something. I'm no prude, but I'd like a bit of variety in my storytelling!

There's probably 2 or 3 stories on the site that aren't erotic

Oh, good. So it'll only take me a hundred years to find those two or three, only to find out that they're poorly written anyway. Ha ha.

As obsessed as I currently am, the first fanfic I found and started reading was one about Dark Souls. There hasn't been any sex in there... yet. D:
Edit: I browsed fanfiction.net, not FF.net

OOH! Dark Souls fanfic could be good. I'll have to go searching for that... It's called Breaking the Cycle - I haven't gotten very far (as I don't like reading stuff on the PC), but it sounds interesting and features well-known characters.

Yeah fanfiction.net is the place to go, I shorten it to FF all the time.

Actually, I'm pretty sure A03 (Archive of Our Own) is where a lot of writers have moved from FanFiction. I don't really read much fanfic--just a few pieces here and there--but a lot of my friends are into fandom, and from what I've heard, that's where a lot of folks have moved to.
