I've very eclectic in my musical tastes. Indie-folk-rock is my favourite genre, though. After that, I really enjoy metal music (Cradle of Filth, Rammstein, Type O Negative, Scar Symmetry, a few others). Another one of my favourites is bluegrass (not country, NEVER country music) and folk music. And I mean ALL types of folk music, foreign included. I also can't deny that I enjoy quite a bit of pop music. Lady Gaga is one of my favourite artists, and she's a personal hero of mine. There a few rap groups that I like, like Eminem, but overall I don't like rap very much as a genre. I also really like grunge and other forms of "rock" music, but I don't like "rock" bands like Shinedown and others of that modern rock feel. I really enjoy the band "Ra" though, so if you guys haven't heard of them, you should check them out. Classic rock is where it's at, Led Zep and the gang, ya know? Oh, and I can't forget classical music. I love me some Chopin.
What about you guys?

I don't have a type of music I like. I like some songs from all genres, so I've never been able to narrow it down.

What are some of your favourite bands from each genre? I listed mine

Oh man that's hard. I won't list by genre, because I always get confused as too what music belongs to each genre. But I can list some artists that I like.
Architecture in Helsinki Austra Bliss n Eso Bloc Party Cat Power Chiddy Bang Daft Punk Enya Fleetwood Mac Gorillaz Katy Perry Kinds of Convenience Lily Allen Metric Neon Indian Missy Higgins No Doubt Radiohead Ratatat Royskopp Sigur Ros Smashing Pumpkins The Band The Beatles The National Underworld Unkle Woodkid
Woo hooray for alphabetical order! (Yes, I just went through my whole music list and picked out artists I like the most haha).
There's also like... hundreds more. I just didn't want to make the list too big first time round.

It's awesome to have another Fleetwood Mac fan about. If I didn't like them, I'd really hate my real name lol.
I don't much like Lilly Allen. Some of her stuff is really good, but she just rubs me the wrong way for some reason.
I love No Doubt, The Gorillaz, and I also really like Enya. Her music is so soothing.
I've recently started to appreciate Katy Perry. I used to hate her, but she's really grown on me. I don't like her early stuff though.

I love Lily Allen for a few reasons. Well, I like her music, but I also like that she's someone who's not afraid to post a video of herself in non-flattering clothing, without make-up and looking all sweaty and well... normal. Especially since she lives in a world where everyone is so obsessed with appearance. Most other pop music type people would never post a video of themselves looking like a real human being like that.
I love No Doubt. Have you heard of a band called Hole? It's a band with Courtney Love at the helm, and is really sort of grungy 90's music.
Enya is so soothing. I listen to her while drawing sometimes.

I can respect that about Lily Allen, and my impression of her is probably incorrect. I didn't give her much attention back when she was more popular in the US. Maybe I'll give her a second try.
I'm gonna have to pass on the Courtney Love band though, I have no respect for her whatsoever. Same reason why I won't give Justin Bieber a listen, but my disrespect for Courtney Love is much deeper than my distaste for The Bieb.

Have you heard Lily Allens new song "Hard Out Here". If not you should listen to it and watch the video. I love it because it's her answer to Blurred Lines. She got so angry at how sexist Blurred Lines is that she made a song and video that almost directly parodies it in some parts. It's hilarious!
Yeah, I can't say I really like Courtney Love as a person, I do like her music though. Although, I don't know a lot about her really. Why is it you don't like her? Is it because of Cobain?

Lol! I'll have to listen to it/watch the video! Blurred Lines is pretty rapey AND Robin Thicke can't sing to save his life. I'll get a good laugh out of it, I'm sure.
Cobain is only part of the reason I don't like Courtney Love. She disgusts me the way that she parades around all drugged up or drunk on stage/in public. Or how she is always in and out of rehab. I could go on, but those are the basics lol.

Yeah I was actually horrified at how big Blurred Lines was and how many people liked it. It's 2013 and people are going crazy over a song that supports rape culture? What is wrong with people haha. It's one of the reasons why I like Allen's song so much. If Blurred Lines comes on the radio while my roommate and I are in the car we change it quickly every time.
Ah yeah, things like that annoy me too, a lot of celebs end up into drugs, it's just common, but it is annoying if the parade around like they are almost proud of it. She is a bit of a train wreck that's for sure.

I don't think people even know it's rape culture because it's set to catchy tune, but if it was rap or something, I'm sure everyone would have had a hayday with it. People are so ignorant sometimes. That dance he and Miley Cyrus did on the stage to that song was one of the most disgusting things I've ever seen on live television.
A lot of celebs do drugs, that's true. I just think it's unacceptable to be so public about your abuse. If you're going to get help and actually stay off of drugs, that's one thing because it's mildly inspiring (not really though). Like Robert Downey Jr. He got help! He's a stand-up man now. I mean, come on.

Yeah it's pretty shocking. The first time I heard of Blurred Lines I had never actually heard the song, but saw people talking about it online. So I googled the lyrics and honestly thought it was a joke. I read the lyrics and thought someone had made them up, since a real song couldn't use lyrics this bad. When you actually read them the whole song is about the idea that consent isn't necessary when it comes to sex, which is a really scary thing.
I haven't seen the dance with him and Miley. I avoided watching it haha.

I watched it because I have a morbid curiosity about celebrities lol. Everyone was talking about it and I was like... well, I want to see this cringe-worthy event. It was definitely cringe-worthy... my gods.
The sad thing is, I actually like some of Miley's music. It's just so catchy.

Haha I saw photos and that was enough for me. And it's not sad to like some of her songs, it's fine. I don't mind some of them.

I don't tend to follow music genres so much as I do particular bands I happen to like, if that makes sense. So, with that in mind, I might just list the bands/singers I like, for what it's worth. (Also in alphabetical order!)
Amorphis (Finnish folk metal) Billy Bragg (British punk/folk/protest/slice of life) Neko Case (American alternative/folk rock) Johnny Cash (More American folk than country to me) Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds (Australian aternative/experimental/goth rock) Alela Diane (American indie folk) Dead Can Dance (Australian neo-classical dark wave) Bob Dylan (Self explanatory really) Joy Division (British post-punk) Natalie Merchant (American alternative folk/pop) My Silent Wake (British progressive doom metal) Paramaecium (Australian doom metal) Saviour Machine (American neo-classical symphonic goth) Shonen Knife (Japanese pop punk) 16 Horsepower (American alternative country/folk) Stonefield (Australian glam rock) Virgin Black (Australian neo-classical symphonic goth/doom) Wilco (American alternative/indie rock) Wovenhand (American alternative folk)
It's so hard categorising these performers. A lot of what I listen to tends to straddle a number of different genres.
