I've very eclectic in my musical tastes. Indie-folk-rock is my favourite genre, though. After that, I really enjoy metal music (Cradle of Filth, Rammstein, Type O Negative, Scar Symmetry, a few others). Another one of my favourites is bluegrass (not country, NEVER country music) and folk music. And I mean ALL types of folk music, foreign included. I also can't deny that I enjoy quite a bit of pop music. Lady Gaga is one of my favourite artists, and she's a personal hero of mine. There a few rap groups that I like, like Eminem, but overall I don't like rap very much as a genre. I also really like grunge and other forms of "rock" music, but I don't like "rock" bands like Shinedown and others of that modern rock feel. I really enjoy the band "Ra" though, so if you guys haven't heard of them, you should check them out. Classic rock is where it's at, Led Zep and the gang, ya know? Oh, and I can't forget classical music. I love me some Chopin. What about you guys? What pieces specifically by Chopin are you listening to, and what performer? That makes a huge difference. (I'm a pretty huge classical snob since I spent 13 years playing/competing in classical piano, and 7 or so in cello.) I think there's a pretty big collection of Ashkenazy's floating somewhere out there on the web (I have it on my ipod, anyway), but I've never been a huge fan of him compared to Horowitz or Rubinstein, though of course my preference there also depends entirely on the piece. And when it comes to his piano concertos, Kissin's legendary 1984 performance is simply unparalleled. (If you're looking for further recs: if you're specifically interested in piano music, I'd look up Tchaikovsky, Schumann, Schubert; for cello, though, my favorite's definitely Fauré, and he's got a few superb orchestral pieces as well.) With my hipster snob cred duly established, I can now completely invalidate it by admitting that for the most part, I listen to some pretty mainstream stuff. Mostly EDM and dubstep (Adventure Club, Oceanlab/Above&Beyond, Kat Krazy, etc.). I also listen to a bunch of female vocalists like Florence and the Machine, Marina and the Diamonds, Ellie Goulding, Foxes, etc. (for some reason, all of my favorite singers have been from the British Isles area lately). I used to like Lily Allen until I saw her music video for "It's Hard Out Here For A Bitch." However, my favorite band is a pop-rock group Japanese-Canadian group called Monkey Majik (got to see them live the time before last that I was back in Japan <3). When I'm writing, I have a weird mix of classical, soundtrack, and EDM on my playlists. Oh, and Iron & Wine. The dude who looks like Jesus. I'll listen to most music, though, except metal, country, and mainstream rap. Actual hip-hop is great, and I've been meaning to get more into the political underground scene, but yeah, mainstream rap is often quite terrible.

ps. the (JP) that you might see stands for Japan because there is also an American band by the same name from the 70s or 80s. just wanted to clear that up so noone would be confused.

When I listen to Chopin, it's not any specific performer. I usually just go to youtube and find the pieces that I like the most. But, if you have a suggestion for the performers who do his pieces the best, I'd be more than willing to listen to them. Might change how much I already loved his music. I am a huge Tchaikovsky fan as well. I also really like Pier Gynt. Hall of the Mountain King is one of my favourite pieces of all time. You lost some hispster snob cred by liking dubstep, I'm so sorry LOL. Just kidding I don't like dubstep unless it's video game songs that have been converted into dubstep (Zelda dubstep is essentially the best music on this planet lol)

Just kidding I don't like dubstep unless it's video game songs that have been converted into dubstep (Zelda dubstep is essentially the best music on this planet lol) Definitely depends on the piece for Chopin! Which specific pieces do you like? I've found that I've tended to prefer Rubinstein's performance of the Ballads and Scherzos, for the most part (though I'm also a huge fan of Kakeshi Takehashi, a blind Japanese pianist that pretty much no one's ever heard of). Horowitz for the nocturnes, and depends on which one for the waltzes. I refuse to listen to anyone but Kissin's 1984 performance of Chopin's concertos, however. If you like Tchaikovsky, listen to Van Cliburn's performance of the first Tchaikovsky concerto (and the second Rachmaninoff one as well, come to think of it). I've listened to a few other performers and none of them come even close to Cliburn. As for Grieg (Peer Gynt dude), he's written some lighter piano pieces that you might like as well (I really need to listen to his piano concerto at some point too.) Tbf, I don't listen to nasty dubstep, more melodic dubstep, like remixes of Foxes, etc. AKA not particularly mainstream =P (Adventure Club for life <3)
