Good grief. That stinks actually. I don't think I'd cope with something like that either! The article doesn't really mention anything that can be done about it unless you want to start imitating gum chewers. Somehow I don't think you'd want that!

It's actually interesting, because I have varying reactions to sounds. For example, some sounds such as people chewing loudly or chewing gum make me very angry, frustrated and even sad all at once, and very quickly. But I also have similarly strong reactions but of pleasure or relaxation when it comes to some other sounds. So it's sort of equally as intense in both ends of the spectrum haha.

Oh well. At least it's not all bad then.
Still, it must be a bit of a trial when you go to restaurants with people, right?

I actually almost never have trouble with restaurants. Restaurants are usually busy, or have music playing, and have kitchen sounds, lots of people, and just general noise. So I can't isolate individual eating sounds. It's hardest when I'm in a small room with just one or two people, or when I'm with someone eating with no music or TV or any other sound playing. In those cases I usually have to find an excuse to leave the room. I also usually never let people sit close to me when eating, I try and keep my distance and create space between us at this time. It's something that my girlfriend found strange and annoying when we started going out. But she's used to it now.

Well, it's good that you have ways of minimising or cancelling out the distress it might otherwise cause. Is this something you've had since you were a child, or is it a somewhat recent development? When did you first notice that it was even a thing?
Yes, I'm nosy.

No, I didn't have it when I was a child, I started noticing it about puberty, so early teens, like 13, 14 etc and it just got worse over the years. I've been about the same as I am now since I was 16 or 17. I remember way back to when I was 18 years old and went on a tour to Russia with a school group. I was on a bus with the group and almost every single one of them was chewing gum, and I didn't have headphones on me at the time. To this day that's still the most uncomfortable I've ever felt. I'm sure I started crying at least once, and tried to take my mind off it with pain by digging my nails into my hands and biting my tongue. I try to make sure I ALWAYS carry headphones with me everywhere now.

Yeah, a wise precaution for sure. It's good that it's at least manageable.

Yeah, almost all of my close friends know to never chew gum in my presence now which also helps, and I also have another friend who experiences the same thing so we talk about it from time to time.

I chew gum when I'm driving to work in the morning. I can't say that I find it disgusting at all. Still, I don't like seeing someone's chewed up gum stuck to anything other than a bag in a garbage can...that's just gross . aannnd yes.. peanut butter dissolves gum and shampoo/soap in turn washes away peanut butter. T'is the easiest way I know to remove disgusting gum from things that you can't just pick it off. I'll never forget the time my brother fell asleep with gum in his mouth when we were kids. He woke up in the night and discovered that he was stuck to his pillow...lol. OMG what a mess! The gum was in his hair, in his ears, all over his pyjamas. I had to cut him free of his pillow case with a pair of scissors.

Haha, my Mum likes to chew gum in the car but I tell her off/hide the gum whenever I am in the car with her. She can do it all she wants when she's driving alone but when it's us two in the car then she's not allowed.

My mother recently told me that almost the same thing happened to my older brother when he was a child. He also fell asleep with gum in his mouth, and in the morning it was stuck in his hair. My mother had to cut it out - and my brother learned his lesson.
