As a hardcore Assassin's Creed fan, I wanted to create a new thread for this game. It looked amazing in all its trailers. I have watched the cinematic trailer over and over again. I've not been this excited over an Assassin's Creed game since Assassin's Creed II and that's saying something. It's because finally it seems they're actually making a large difference.
The Ezio trilogy was good, but with Revelations it became quite boring. Assassin's Creed II, Brotherhood and Revelations were basically one big game, chopped into three parts, too long for its own good. It was the same gameplay basically, same graphic engine. There was no real progress. This is what made me disappointed in Assassin's Creed III, because the time setting didn't peak my interest and let's face it, there were no really interesting buildings to climb in the game and the three climbing in the frontier just became boring.
With Assassin's Creed IV, they did make a difference. However it was never really a true next-gen game. What they did was use the same engine as ACIII and improve the graphics a bit for next-gen, so it could be sold for both current-gen and next-gen. The singleplayer was not remarkable. In fact some found the story quite boring. I thought it was adequate and I could ignore it because I was very interested in jus pirating. That was a great improvement, but it's not gameplay that belongs in every Assassin's Creed game and I hoped they wouldn't exploit it in the next game.
So they've proven with Unity that they won't (though it still seems that they will with Comet, another Assassin's Creed game coming out for current-gen). But with Unity they've made a large improvement on graphics, gameplay... Everything. You play as Arno Dorian, an Assassin of Austrian/French heritage on a quest to redeem yourself as he blames himself for the death of his adoptive father. He already looks pretty cool to me, though I'm not sure if I prefer him over other Assassins, like Ezio or Edward. That remains to be seen. While the game is set in Paris, which looks magnificent, it actually starts in Versailles. So I'm curious to see that. When we come to the gameplay there's a lot more to be told.
For starters the stealth has been improved as you have to sneak crouched behind guards to assassinate them. You can't just walk behind them for not to be detected. The parkour has been largely improved. When you wanted to get down from a large building in the previous games. You had to either jump in a haystack or in water. Or you had to drop yourself to a ledge, until it was safe to jump to the ground. Well now you can jump down to ledges. In other ways there's a parkour up, parkour down option added, that will add a great variety and will make free-running much more smooth.
Now there's also a Phantom blade, which can fire darts. I guess they thought the Hidden Gun in ACII was too farfetched, besides you still have a pistol that can fire a few shots. Your Eagle Pulse (as they know call Eagle Vision) also evolves. Meaning the more you become experienced, the more guards you can detect in a building you want to infiltrate. So this makes it of course challenging since you won't be able to detect all guards at first with your Eagle Pulse. I think they've added more skill trees, for other purposes. There's also a large variety of random missions, like murder investigations, riots, thieves you can intercept and of course the co-op is pretty unique as it will still be in the singleplayer when you perform these missions together. I don't know how they'll create large variety though, because every player will be Arno Dorian. Because some criticised the co-op complaining that you can't play as a female assassin. But it's only logical since the lead of the game is obviously male and everyone in co-op plays him.
