Are these gaming forums where this is happening then?

All over. It happens in game, on youtube (comments), blogging sites like tumblr, instagram, forums, gaming chat rooms, facebook, twitter etc. Pretty much any form of social media or networking about games. I was just saying for me personally it's only ever happened on forums, but to other people it happens everywhere.

If you could say there is a culture about games the "gamers" have strongly aligned what they think the culture is and have an unshakeable stance they enforce like the commandments. It happens everywhere and even from industry icons.
The nerve these people have to stand up against it baffles me. I find it hard to see good coming from this too. The pushback from the harassers has been so strong it is deeply unsettling. The criticism goes over their heads and just makes them more mad and indignant.

Yeah it's kind of a double-edged sword. The more people stand up against it the angrier/more aggressive these idiots become, but if we just sit back and do nothing then thousands of people will still face horrible abuse every day. Abuse that has long since passed online "trash talk" and is now getting into dangerous territory of people accessing home addresses and phone numbers and threatening people and their family members. It's such a shame that video games, something I am so passionate about and have loved my entire life seem to bring out some of the worst scum of the earth... as well as some of the best people I know. This can't last forever, I dunno, maybe it can. But it seems like more actual game creators and devs are on the sensible side of this and are doing what they can to eradicate harassment.

It also depends a lot on the games sometimes. A more mature crowd play certain types of games than others.
But a lot of the time the abuse comes from just voicing your opinion about something online. If you even dare to day that female representation in the video game world isn't 100% perfect then you will be attacked, viciously, I have both experienced and witnessed this. There's nothing gamers hate more than females pointing out flaws in their precious games.

Consumerism is kind of a culture so people identifying strongly with these stories sort of makes sense. The idea that these things need to be strictly criticized while overall good really locks horns with people in my generation and younger whose cultures are basically just anime/video games/pizza.
I kind of get where some of the problem people are coming from but I think they are going about their dilemma in the worst way possible.

Latest news is that female gamers are now having their lives seriously threatened. A prominist feminist in gaming was going to give a talk at an American University soon but it was cancelled due to countless threats of her assassination and mass shootings of the crowd. I WISH I was making this up. And what's worse, even with actual death threats the police couldn't seize weapons or do pat downs at the venue because the state had an open carry gun law. So because they couldn't guarantee the safety of the speaker and the attendee's they actually had to cancel it. This makes me angry about so many things, but seriously what the fuck is wrong with America's gun laws. There was an actual threat of a mass shooting, and even then authorities couldn't even do a simple pat down? Jesus. www.kotaku.com.au/2014/10/terror-threat-targets-anita-sarkeesian-for-speaking-at-university/

sigh.... she's not a gamer, she's admitted to disliking video games. she's a feminist arguing over anything she can. does this make death threats right? no. But you can't say "female gamers" are ahving their lives threatened based on this one story. she's an internet troll with an agenda, plain and simple

TAZ you do realise that video was made by the exact type of "GamerGate" dudebro's who think it's fun to threaten to rape and kill women online right? Only further enabling them to do work.
Also, as far as Anita goes, at least you said death threats aren't alright, but it's kind of shocking that you're trying to defend the people who think it's okay to do so.
As for the clip in that video, it was like, a 2 second clip taken completely out of context. It could mean anything at all, but the fact that you believe it straight away based on one extremely biased video shows how gullible some people are, and how these people are spreading hate. Do you know how much you can warp basically anything at all by taking it out of context? Just ask any celebrity every who's had anything written about them in a magazine.
