How many different types of animals have you owned? To some this list will be huge, others not so big. I'm always interested in seeing.
In my life I have owned the following as pets.

I had two budgerigars when I was very young. One escaped and never came back. The other died of some skin disease. Broke my heart.
Then I had a beautiful border collie in my early 20s. She was a sweet natured thing. She died of heartworm because her previous owners hadn't kept up with her treatment.
Gee, I'm a real barrel of laughs, aren't I.

My bf has a soft spot of them because of a childhood dog he had that died. He practically cries if we see a border collie, so don't feel bad

It was the kindest thing to do in that situation. Your BF is a discerning chap if he likes border collies. They are absolutely gorgeous animals, and blindingly smart too.

I understand how you feel. I had to euthanize my chameleon about 6 weeks ago, and Till died as well about three weeks ago. My heart really goes out to anyone who has ever lost a pet. It's just as hard and hurtful as losing a person. I still haven't recovered from Till's death, and I don't think I will for a while. He was my baby and I loved that iguana more than anything

Pets really are more than just pets when you think about it. They're members of the family. Sure, they don't think or act like you or I do, but they have their own distinct little personalities and ways of showing affection that you really do miss them when they're gone.

I think we never really recover from it. It's been a couple of years since I had to put my dog of 16 years down and I still miss him all the time. Animals stay with us just like lost human family members do.

unfortunately I'm not allowed to have pets in my house so yea I had a goldfish when I was little and we had a dog for a day or two. don't remember what kind of dog it was. all I remember was that her name was Skittles and she bit me while I was petting her once.

How did it come about that you had a dog for such a short time?

You're right for sure. To me, Till really was like a son. Especially since I had to spend the majority of my day caring for him because after the first cat attack he was special needs. I came to know him really well and truly love and appreciate his presence. He loved me too a lot, which is somethign that is rare for iguana owners to get, especially when they're still so young. I miss him I think we never really recover from it. It's been a couple of years since I had to put my dog of 16 years down and I still miss him all the time. Animals stay with us just like lost human family members do. I think it's just like when you lose a person. It takes a lot of time for that wound to heal. You'll always miss them, but eventually you just kind of learn to have that feeling and you've settled with it. If that makes any sense.

It really is just a feeling that you get accustomed to, but it does take a long time. I lost my border collie about 25 years ago, and there are still times - rare though they are - when I dream that she's alive. In those dreams she's running around and enjoying life, and I'm marveling that I could have got it so wrong in thinking that she was dead. And when I wake up? Gah. It's the most awful feeling when I realise that it was indeed just a dream. That absolutely sucks.

Hell, every morning when I wake up I forget temporarily that he's dead and then I realize that I no longer need to go turn on his lights and give him a kiss and ask if he slept well. It's rough man.

SJ, are guinea pigs as nervy and prone to die at the drop of a hat as I've been led to believe?
