I wasn't sure where to stick this, so I thought I'd go with the "In All Seriousness" bit of the forum. Hope y'all don't mind. Anyway, on with the thing. I was shocked to read this article on my FB feed. It outlines some of the "foods" and food additives that are still used in America (and even some other countries) when they really shouldn't be. The side effects of a lot of these ingredients is downright shocking, and it alarms me how big corporations are quite happy to poison the customer in order to maximise profits. And how do they come up with the idea of using specific harmful chemicals and whatnot to add to food anyway? Sounds more like something a Nazi scientist would have done, just to see what happened next! What do you think?

I knew about some of this, but not all of it. I can't believe that every food I'm ingesting has this stuff in it. I'd like to see their sources for their information. The article seems like another way to give the US a little more negativity, which we really don't need.
Genetically altering crops, in some cases, is not a bad thing. Antibiotics in the meat is always a bad thing and would be a nice explanation for why I'm always sick. Again though, they need sources. Unfortunately most people are going to believe the information without sources. I'm a scientifically inclined person when it comes to information, and I can't just believe something I see without reading the research article(s) that should be coupled with it.

You make some fair points here, and I agree about them not providing sources. It would be nice to have some so that we could do some more reading up on the subject. Having said that, it wouldn't surprise me in the slightest if even half of this was true. I see this less as an America bashing exercise and more as a cautionary article about knowing what's in your food. America is a great nation with many freedoms and values that are the envy of the world, but like any place on earth it has its fair share of problems. This is just one of those problems. That pink slime stuff which is listed in the article is actually a thing. I'll put two videos here that explore the issues in and around that with a number of different viewpoints represented. The first is one part of something called Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution in which he tries to get the people in the audience to consider their food choices when it comes to meat. The second is from The Rubin Report (a show I'm not familiar with) where more than one viewpoint is represented. They have quite an interesting discussion where the science behind the dangers of ammonia washing is questioned, the role of food corporations in ensuring the safety and quality of their meat products, and what part poverty might play in the everyday food choices American people make.

Ugh kind of makes me glad I'm vegetarian, so many of those things were meat!
I hate this type of stuff. And it's not just America either. There is a type of dye used in denim jeans that can actually be toxic for you. Yet in Australia it's fine. And too make it even worse, most of our "toxic jeans" are made in China and shipped over here. Yet we can't send them back, because it's illegal to have jeans with that chemical in them in China, but not in Australia.

I knew about the pink slime stuff as well. America's food industry IS disgusting, but I'm so tired of articles being posted without sources. I would like to point out that the TOXIC ENERGY DRINKS part is kind of stupid as well. Sports drinks in America aren't the same as energy drinks. I'm not saying energy drinks don't contain BVO, but sports drinks =/= energy drinks. Also, while I am not saying that BVO is harmless, the only cases that have proven to show adverse health effects are from people who over-consume. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brominated_vegetable_oil . I suggest reading that wiki article to learn more about it. Red 40 is no longer made with coal tar en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Allura_Red_AC, and I'm going to assume the same for the yellow dye that they mentioned. They're now made with petroleum, which is probably still not good for us lol. Personally, I think it's ridiculous that any of this stuff is in our foods. We've evolved to be a people that likes the stuff we eat to look good and taste better, when most of the stuff in it's natural form is bland tasting (hence why salt was not widely available during the Great Depression) and doesn't look so great in it's normal form. If I could, I'd move to a remote location and raise my own food. Alas, I can't, so I'm stuck eating this crap. And veggies aren't safe here in the states either. Not with all the pesticides we use on our crops. There are places like Whole Foods etc that sell organic/natural foods, but they're too expensive for commonfolk like myself, so I'm stuck eating whatever crap I buy at Wal-Mart or fast food.

Here's some perhaps true additional knowledge on the whole "pink slime" thing. www.snopes.com/food/prepare/msm.aspIt does seem to think a bunch of people professed to stop using it.

Some good links there guys. Unfortunately, the more informed I get, the more confusing the issue becomes. I think I'll just stick with a diet of air from now on. Yup, I'll become a "breatharian"! That should be safe, right?

Just grow all your own food. That should be simple right? Especially for those of us who live in apartments without gardens.

There are or were people at one point who call themselves Fruitarian which is really not a good idea from what I can tell.
