What are you like with competing sounds? And by that I just mean a lot of sounds playing at once. I personally hate it when there are a lot of sounds happening all at once. For example, if I have the TV on and want to watch a video on my phone, I will mute the tv, watch the video then turn the TV sound on again.
My room-mate is the opposite to me and she seems to like a lot of sounds. She will have the TV turned up loudly, and also be watching videos on her laptop just as loudly at the same time, and in the same room. So it's just a whole mix of different loud sounds happening at once. This is something that I dislike, as lots of different competing sounds like that just turn into gibberish in my mind and make me feel like I'm going insane.
What's it like for you? Are you fine with lots of sound, or are you like me and prefer one at a time?

depends on what I'm doing. if I'm watching tv then I don't really mind but if I'm gaming then I usually will just listen to the game and nothing else though at times I will have some music going bit not very often.

Well, being deaf and wearing a hearing aid means that I can find it very difficult to distinguish one sound from another when there's a lot of it going on at once. This makes it next to impossible to pick out one person's voice in a social situation where everyone's speaking at once. I usually have to concentrate so hard that I end up going home with a splitting headache and/or feeling wiped out energy-wise.
At home, if I have to answer the phone then I'll have the TV and the stereo and anything else turned off to make sure I can have the best chance of hearing the caller properly. If I'm listening to music, then other things must be turned off. If I'm watching a movie, same again. I'm sure you get the picture. I need to be able to focus on the sound that I'm trying to hear to the exclusion of all else.

I also don't like to hear many different sounds all at once. I can't concentrate when I'm working or communicating while there's music or the TV in the background. It's similar to what Taliesin posted, but for me the reason is that I get distracted so easily. :/

Oh man, sometimes I wish I had a hearing aid so I could use it as an excuse to ask my roommate to stop playing 3 noisy things at once haha. It drives me insane when she does it.

Noooooo competing sounds unless it's harmony in music or something!!!! I can't stand clutter (as in, on counters and in work spaces) and competing sounds is like noise clutter to me...GAH!

That's a good way of putting it. Noise clutter is exactly how I would describe it as well. Clutter in your brain.

I agree. Unless it's a song and it's meant to be like that, I hate it anywhere else in my life. Noise clutter BEGONE!
I actually do switch my hearing aid off at times, just because it gets too much.

clutter period is annoying. it bugs me to no avail though unfortunately the people I work with have no problem with it.

I just find clutter of any kind overwhelming. It's one of the reasons I don't go into downtown Toronto very often... too much clutter: people, signs, sounds, traffic, lights, smells. Overexposure to that level of sensory stimulation makes me want to crawl into a hole...lol.
