The extent of my knowledge on instagram is that people post pictures; often of everything they eat; why? The only time I have ever taken a picture of my food was to make someone specific jell; I.E. at cheese cake factory and I text a friend a picture of my cake. Why post a picture of everything you eat?
Only thing I know about tumbler is that lots of people post the same funny pictures over and over again.

Ah yes, the epidemic of taking photos of your food. I think it's to make you look fancy or something, like "hey everyone, look how amazing this food is, I'm at a nice restaurant and your not". Although I do admit, my family loves a good meal, and when we are on holiday somewhere we do often take a photo of our food if it looks amazing and we want to remember it, we very rarely post those photos on social media though, they are for us.

Yes; like if you make a great home made cake, maybe the best one you have ever made; take it, maybe post it and be proud of it.
But people don't even take pictures of just fancy food; it can be any food....... I have seen pictures of bowls of cereal, a normal ham n cheese.......
It is an epidemic and one I do not understand!

I'm waiting for the day people start taking photos of the results of their bowel movements. I bet it'll happen sooner or later.

Instagram is a good platform to be popular, people use some tools like zen-promo.com and other algorithms to get many followers and enjoy it.
